லண்டனில் உள்ள வங்கியொன்றில் அதிநவீன ஹாக்கிங் முறையைப் பயன்படுத்தி கொள்ளையடிக்க முற்பட்ட கும்பலொன்றை பொலிஸார் கைது செய்துள்ளனர்.
தென் கிழக்கு லண்டனில் அமைந்துள்ள சன்டேன்டர் (Santander) வங்கியில் புகுந்த 12 பேர் கொண்ட கும்பலானது அதிநவீன முறையில் கொள்ளையடிக்க முயன்றுள்ளனர்.
இவ்வாறு நகரிலுள்ள வங்கிகளில் பல மில்லியன் பவுண்ட்களை கொள்ளையடித்துள்ளனர்.
வங்கியினுள் செல்லும் கொள்ளையர்கள், வங்கி சம்பந்தப்பட்ட கணனித் தொடர்புகளை தங்களது கட்டுப்பாட்டில் கொண்டு வருவதற்கான கருவியை இரகசியமாகப் பொருத்திவிட்டு சென்றுவிடுவர்.
அதன் பின்னர் வங்கிக் கணக்குகளிலிருந்து பணத்தினை கொள்ளையிட்டு வந்துள்ளனர்.
இந்த கும்பல் சன்டேன்டர் (Santander) வங்கியில் கொள்ளையடிக்க முற்பட்டபோது, பொலிசார் மடக்கிப் பிடித்துள்ளனர்.

இவ்வாறு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வந்த கொள்ளைச் சம்பவங்கள் பற்றி ஸ்கொட்லாண்ட் யாட் பொலிஸ் நிபுணர்கள் மேற்கொண்ட விசாரணைகளை அடுத்து இக் கொள்ளைச் சம்பவம் முறியடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இதனால் மில்லியன் கணக்கான பவுண்ட் பணத்தினை கொள்ளை போகாமல் பொலிசார் காப்பாற்றியுள்ளனர்.
கைது செய்யப்பட்டவர்களில் 7 பேர் பிரித்தானியாவைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்றும் 2 பேர் இந்தியர்கள் மற்றும் ஏனையவர்கள் ஈரான், ஈராக்கைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் எனவும் பொலிஸார் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.
இவர்கள் அனைவரும் 23 வயது முதல் 50 வயதுக்குட்பட்டவர்கள் எனத் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகிறது.
லண்டனில் மூன்றாவது பெரிய வங்கியான சன்டேன்டர் (Santander) 1300 கிளைகளைக் கொண்டிருப்பதுடன், 25 மில்லியனுக்கு மேற்பட்ட வாடிக்கையாளர்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Once they wore stocking masks and carried sawn-off shotguns. But today’s bank robbers prefer to do business at the click of a button.
And in the ever-growing world of cyberspace, hi-tech crooks are relying on brains rather than brawn. It means police and financial institutions have had to become increasingly vigilant as the thieves come up with ever more ingenious ways to fleece the system.
The danger was dramatically illustrated yesterday after it was revealed an international gang of hackers tried to steal millions of pounds from one high street bank – using a computer gadget.
The attempted sting began when a bogus maintenance man walked into a branch of Santander and secretly plugged it into one of the bank’s computers.
The KVM – a keyboard video mouse box – gave the cyber crooks control of the computer and remote access to the bank’s vast network of accounts at the UK’s third biggest bank.
But the Trojan Horse-style plan was thwarted at the last minute before the gang could start siphoning off any money when the small box – available for as little as £10 online – was spotted and deactivated.
Police rounded up 12 suspects in a series of swoops on Thursday as Scotland Yard experts investigated the “sophisticated” scam. The KVM box was plugged in at a Santander branch in the Surrey Quays shopping centre in South East London.
The devices are used in many office IT networks and allow more than one user to control a computer, sometimes from hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
Det Insp Mark Raymond, of the Police Central E-crime Unit, said yesterday: “This was a sophisticated plot that could have led to the loss of a very large amount of money and is the most significant case of its kind that we have come across.”
Officers raided a house in Hounslow, West London, and arrested 11 men aged between 23 and 50. Another man, aged 34, was held in Victoria, also West London.
Six other addresses were searched across London and Berkshire, where a large amount of equipment, including a number of computers, was seized and taken for examination by specialist officers.
Scotland Yard said the speed with which the device was detected had avoided multi-million pound losses.
Santander is the third largest bank in the UK in terms of deposits. It has more than 25 million customers and more than 1,300 branches.
A Santander spokesman said: “We are pleased we have been able, through the robustness of our systems, to prevent the fraud and help the police gather the evidence they needed to make the arrests.”
Of the 12 suspects in custody last night seven are British and two Indian. The others are from Portugal, Iraq and Iran.

This is the 21st Century bank robbery. This was a well thought-out crime and by a big operation. These guys know their stuff and will have tested this elsewhere in other banks, maybe not in the UK, but in the likes of Eastern Europe.
Thieves are becoming more creative. No-one smashes an ATM from a wall with a bulldozer any more.
Or if you do, you are the stupid criminal who is going to be caught. The same goes for the guy with a balaclava and a shotgun who thinks he is going to rob the bank.
They haven’t caught up with the technology. Once you start understanding technology you see what you can do with it and the opportunities it opens up.
I’ve been at hacking conferences where people have captured the infrared credentials off car key fobs. When you push the button to send the signal, they simply capture that signal and copy it.
Why car jack you on your drive or at the lights when they can walk to your car and open the door with their own set of coded keys?
The police, and the criminals, are learning something new every day. They could not hack into the bank so they planted something they could control remotely. People always find a way.
